KAMM Pre-Conference Day sessions are free to KAMM members. Participants earn CECs from ASFPM.

KAMM conference registrants may participate in the pre-conference offsite activities.

Take a tour of the local distillery named for Golden Pond, Kentucky's historic master stillmaker, Casey Jones. Experience the distillery, taste bourbon drawn straight from the barrel, and finish with a full tasting of their handcrafted spirits. Meet in the KAMM Registration area of the Bruce Convention Center at 1 pm to catch the shuttle to the distillery. The tour begins at 1:30 and ends at 3:30. The shuttle will return to the Convention Center at about 4:00 when you can register for the conference and participate in the evening social events. Limited shuttle space. Participants who opt out of the bourbon tasting may drive to the distillery.

Meet at the Pennyroyal Area Museum at 217 E. 9th Street and join Museum Director Alissa Keller for a Historic Downtown Stroll. This walking tour will discuss historic architecture - exploring some of downtown Hopkinsville's most interesting architecture while sharing stories of the people, businesses, and events that have shaped the historic heart of the town. Afterward, spend some time exploring the museum. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes.

The four-hour workshop will present an overview of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) including the history of floodplain management. During the workshop, attendees will learn what the NFIP is, what the program’s goals are, how floodplain management works in the Commonwealth, what the federal, state, and local roles are, how maps are used, permitting requirements, tools for local officials, tips & tricks, and more.

Speaker Bio: Alex VanPelt is the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Coordinator at the Division of Water. His primary responsibilities include assisting communities in the commonwealth with managing their flood risk, administering state & local floodplain development requirements, ensuring compliance with NFIP regulations and standards, as well as providing technical assistance to communities regarding floodplain management. Alex also serves on the Kentucky State Hazard Mitigation Council, is the At-Large Representative for the Kentucky Association of Mitigation Managers (KAMM), and is the State Silver Jackets Team Lead. Alex received his Master of Science degree in Geography and Environmental Resources from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC), and a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from SIUC. He has been with the Kentucky Division of Water since 2015.

This three-hour workshop will focus on some of the more advanced topics in floodplain management. In this workshop, attendees will learn about how Historic, Residential, and Appurtenant structures within the 1% chance mapped floodplain receive individual consideration when located within a high hazard flood zone on the map. Additionally, this workshop will also delve into how Campers/RVs, fuel tanks, decks, and other developments in the Special Flood Hazard Area are treated to ensure they are reasonably safe from flooding. For those that may be newer to the floodplain management role, don’t let these sessions being called a 201 workshop scare you out of attending. These presentations are designed so that all local floodplain managers can understand them, regardless of your prior levels of training or experience.
