KAMM XV: Celebrate the Past, Inspire the Future

September 16, 2019

We have scheduled various free activities for you to do on our preconference day.  Workshops are offered in the morning and afternoon as well a tour and fun activities.   Our partners from the NWS, USGS, FEMA, USACE and KDOW are providing workshops and their expertise in numerous venues.  We have a jammed-packed day of events kicking off our 15th Anniversary!

It will not be easy to select from so many great opportunities.  Please register for what you plan to attend so that we can plan accordingly.  KAMM members who plan to attend the Preconference Day only, please register via “Pay by Check“, and select “Registering for Preconference only”.

Morning Activities

USGS Streamgaging 101                                            

3-Hour Workshop                                                                             8:30 – 11:30 am

Presenters: Tom Ruby and Justin Boldt, USGS

The three-hour workshop will provide an overview on U.S. Geological Survey Streamgaging.  The course will show how a USGS streamgage is initiated from selecting a site to naming conventions through developing a stage/discharge rating curve then viewing the information on the web.

NFIP 101 – An Introduction to Floodplain Management  

3-Hour Workshop                                                                            9:00 am – Noon

Presenter: Alex VanPelt, KDOW

The three-hour workshop will present an overview of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) including the history of floodplain management.  You will learn what the NFIP is, the program goals, and how the NFIP accomplishes those goals.

NWS SKYWARN® Storm Spotter Training              

2-Hour Class                                                                                      9:30 – 11:30 am

Presenter: Christine Wielgos, NWS

NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service to attend this two-hour class.  SKYWARN® storm spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the nation’s first line of defense against severe weather.

Afternoon Activities

KAMM Annual Golf Outing                                                                 11:45 am

We have planned an exciting afternoon of golf in a 2-man scramble format.  $35 green fees.

Substantial Damage Estimator (SDE)

4-Hour Workshop                                                                              1:00 – 5:00 pm

Presenter:  Mark Vieira, FEMA RIV

This four-hour workshop is a must for anyone who provides local damage assessments.  The Substantial Damage Estimator (SDE) tool was developed by FEMA to assist State and local officials in determining substantial damage for residential and non-residential structures.  The SDE tool can be used to assess flood, wind, wildfire, seismic, and other forms of damage.

Kentucky and Lake Barkley Dam Tour                                       1:00 – 4:00 pm

Join KAMM for a tour of the Kentucky and Lake Barkley Dams!  This is a unique opportunity for KAMM Conference attendees to experience mitigation-related projects constructed and operated by federal agencies.  CLOSED, we are at capacity!

Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) Exam                              1:00 – 4:00 pm

The ASFPM CFM Program is directed toward individuals from widely varying occupations, interests, and educational backgrounds who have routine floodplain management duties.
